1. Getting started with Tinder

What is Tinder?

Tinder is a location-based dating app where users swipe through profiles to find matches. If two people both swipe right (like), it’s a match and they can start chatting. It’s known for being fast, easy to use, and popular for everything from casual flings to serious relationships.

Who is Tinder for?

Tinder is for anyone looking to meet new people — whether for dating, hookups, relationships, or just flirting. It’s used by a wide age range, but most active users are between 18 and 35. It supports all sexualities and genders, and has become popular across both younger and increasingly older generations.

How does Tinder work?

Tinder shows you a stack of profiles based on your location and preferences. You swipe right if you like someone, left if you don’t. If both of you swipe right, it’s a match — and then you can chat.

Free users get limited likes per day. Paid users get extras like unlimited swipes, seeing who liked them, and changing location. The app uses your activity (who you swipe, how often, etc.) to fine-tune who it shows you.

What’s on a Tinder profile?

A Tinder profile includes:

  • Photos (up to 9)
  • A short bio (max 500 characters)
  • Name, age, and location
  • Optional details like job, school, height, lifestyle, interests, Spotify, and Instagram
  • Some users also show “Passions” (like travel, fitness, books)

Basically, it’s a quick snapshot of who you are, meant to grab attention fast and spark matches.

Is Tinder free? What does it cost?

Yes, Tinder is free to use, but with limits.

The free version gives you:

  • A limited number of likes per day
  • Basic filters (age, distance)
  • The ability to match and chat

If you want more, there are paid plans:

Tinder Plus (~$10–15/month)

  • Unlimited likes
  • Rewind last swipe
  • Passport (change location)
  • No ads

Tinder Gold (~$25–30/month)

  • All Plus features
  • See who liked you
  • Top Picks daily

Tinder Platinum (~$30–35/month)

  • All Gold features
  • Message before matching
  • Priority likes

Prices vary based on age, location, and how long you subscribe.

Can you use Tinder without Facebook?

Yes, you can use Tinder without Facebook.

Tinder lets you sign up with just your phone number or Apple ID (on iPhone) or Google account (on Android). Facebook is optional, not required.

If you do connect Facebook, it can auto-fill things like your name, age, and photos, but it’s totally up to you.

2. Building a profile and getting matches

How to make a good Tinder profile?

  1. Pick strong photos
  • Clear headshot: smiling, good lighting
  • Full-body pic: relaxed, natural pose
  • Action shot: doing something (sport, travel, hobby)
Social pic: with friends (but not too many)
  • Avoid: bathroom selfies, blurry pics, sunglasses in every photo
  1. Write a short, playful bio
  • Show personality (humor, interests, vibe)
  • Keep it brief and easy to read
  • Example: “Recovering plant killer. Sucker for reality tv dating shows. Swipe right if you think olives are overrated.
  1. Add Interests & Prompts
  • Use Tinder’s “Passions” to hint at your lifestyle
  • Link Spotify or Instagram if it adds value
  • Mention what you’re looking for, without sounding needy

Your goal is to create a vibe that shows you’re confident, casual, and fun.

What are good Tinder photos?

Great Tinder photos are photos that make you look approachable, confident, and like someone you’d like to have a beer with.

Must-Haves

  1. Clear headshot (well-lit, no filters): smile or confident look
  2. Full-body pic: casual stance, outdoors or in a natural setting
  3. Action shot: doing something you enjoy (sport, travel, cooking, etc.)
  4. Social pic: with 1–2 friends max (not group chaos)
  5. Variety: show different sides of you (fun, chill, stylish)

Avoid

  1. Bathroom mirror selfies
  2. Sunglasses in every pic
  3. Blurry or heavily filtered shots
  4. Shirtless gym selfies (unless done tastefully and not your first photo)
  5. Group photos where no one can tell who you are

What are good Tinder opening lines?

Good opening lines almost always share the same components, they’re:

  • Not overly complimentary. If you butter her up without knowing anything about her, you come off as too easy to impress.
  • Unique and relevant. Something she hasn’t seen 100 times before, ideally based on her profile.
  • Playfully teasing. A light push creates tension and shows confidence. It says, “I don’t need you to like me.”

Who should message first?

On Tinder, either person can message first, there’s no hard rule. But if you want good results? You should message first.

Waiting around kills momentum. Starting the convo puts you in control, shows confidence, and filters out passive matches.

No pressure to be perfect, just don’t say “hey 😉” like a chode.

Why am I not getting matches?

If you’re not getting matches on Tinder, it’s usually one (or more) of these reasons:

  1. Your photos are bad. Low-quality, blurry, dark, or awkward photos. No clear face shot or full-body pic. Or your profile lacks personality and feels generic. Fix: build a profile that displays your vibe as best you can.
  2. Your profile is bland or empty. No bio or it’s something basic or cheesy. Nothing that sparks curiosity because everything looks so samey.  Fix: don’t be for everyone, build a profile that’s polarizing.
  3. You swipe too much or too randomly. Tinder punishes mass swipers. Fix: Be selective. Swipe right with intention.
  4. Your location or filters are too narrow. Tiny radius, strict age range. Fix: Loosen your filters a bit to get more reach.
  5. Your account might be shadowbanned. Happens if you break rules, reset your account too often, or spam. Fix: Try refreshing your pics and profile, or consider starting fresh carefully.

3. Features & functionality

What is the Tinder algorithm?

Basically, Tinder ranks you. If your profile gets likes + replies from attractive/active users, you’re shown to more (and better) people. If not… you’ll be put at the back of the profile deck.

What is Tinder Smart Photos?

It’s a feature where Tinder rotates your photos in different orders and tracks which one gets the best response. It then puts your best-performing photo in the top spot.

How do Super Likes work?

You tap the blue star instead of swiping right, then they get a notification and your profile appears to them with a blue border and star.

You get 1 Super Like Per day, more with Tinder Plus/Gold/Platinum.

How does Tinder Passport / location changing work?

  1. Go to Settings > Location
  2. Search any city or drop a pin on the map
  3. You’ll see and swipe people in that area as if you were there
  4. Matches stay active even after you switch locations again

It’s great for planning dates before you travel. But do note it’s only available for Tinder Plus, Gold, and Platinum.

Can I search by name on Tinder?

There’s no search bar to look someone up directly. You have to swipe and hope they show up in your deck.

Tip: With Tinder Passport (paid feature), you can drop your location near where that person lives. This increases your chances of seeing them on Tinder… but it’s still based on luck.

What is the “Last online” feature?

It lets you see if someone is actively using the app and helps you focus on profiles that are more likely to reply. So it’s a nice way to avoid chatting with ghost profiles.

Can be turned on or off in your settings though. So if someone has it turned off, you won’t see their activity.

What is Tinder Discovery (and how to turn it off)?

When Discovery is ON, people in your area can find and swipe on you. When Discovery is OFF, you can still swipe and match, but no one new can see your profile.

You can turn it off in settings under Discovery. Just hit the toggle.

4. Paid plans and extras

Tinder Plus: What’s included?

Tinder Plus is the most basic paid upgrade, and it gives you more freedom and swiping power than the free version. You get:

  • Unlimited likes. No daily swipe limit
  • Rewind. Undo your last swipe
  • Passport. Change your location and swipe anywhere in the world
  • No ads. Clean, uninterrupted swiping
  • 1 free Boost per month. Puts your profile on top for 30 mins
  • 5 Super Likes per day. Stand out to people you like

It’s usually around $10–15/month, depending on your age and location.

Tinder Gold: What’s included?

Tinder Gold includes everything from Tinder Plus, with a few powerful upgrades to help you match faster and more efficiently. What you get:

  • All Tinder Plus features. Unlimited likes, rewind, passport, no ads, boosts, and super likes.
  • See who liked you. Instantly view everyone who swiped right on you — no more guessing.
  • Top Picks. Tinder shows you a curated selection of high-quality profiles each day.
  • Prioritized placement. Your profile is shown more often to other users.
  • Like statistics. In some regions, you can see how well your profile performs.

It typically costs around $25–30/month, depending on your location and subscription length.

Tinder Platinum: What’s included?

Tinder Platinum is the highest-tier subscription and gives you everything from Gold, plus a few extra features to boost your match quality and control. What do you get?

  • All Tinder Gold and Plus features. Unlimited likes, rewind, passport, see who liked you, no ads, boosts, super likes, and Top Picks.
  • Message before matching. You can send a message along with a Super Like — even if you haven’t matched yet.
  • Priority likes. Your right swipe gets pushed to the front of their swipe deck.
  • Like history. See everyone you’ve liked in the past, even if you didn’t match.

Costs around $30–40/month, depending on region. Best for people who want every edge Tinder can give.

Tinder Boost: What does it do?

Tinder Boost makes your profile one of the top profiles in your area for 30 minutes, meaning way more people will see you while they’re swiping.

  • Shows your profile to more users in your area, instantly
  • Claims up to 10x more profile views during the boost window
  • Great for getting matches quickly, especially during peak hours (evenings/weekends)

You get 1 free Boost per month with Tinder Plus/Gold/Platinum, or you can buy them separately for around $6–10 per Boost, depending on where you are.

Can you see who liked you on Tinder?

Free users can’t see who liked them. You’ll just see a blurred stack of profiles.

Tinder Gold and Platinum users get a full “Likes You” section where you can scroll through everyone who already swiped right on you. You can match instantly — no more guessing or swiping endlessly.

5. Technical issues and troubleshooting

How to log in / create an account

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Open the app and choose how to sign up: Phone number, Google account (Android), Apple ID (iPhone), Facebook (optional).
  3. Follow the prompts to set up your profile. Add name, age, gender, then upload photos, and finally write a short bio (optional but recommended).

To log in again:

  1. Open the app
  2. Choose the same method you used to sign up (phone, Apple, Google, Facebook)
  3. Enter the code or credentials, and you’re in

Tinder not working, what could be wrong?

If Tinder isn’t working, here are the most common reasons:

  1. App glitch or update needed. Try closing and reopening the app and check for updates in the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Poor internet connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to test or try resetting your connection
  3. Tinder is down. Sometimes Tinder has server issues. Check sites like downdetector.com to see if others report problems
  1. You’re shadowbanned or banned. If your matches suddenly disappeared or no profiles show up, you might be flagged. Perhaps due to mass swiping, account resets, or breaking the rules.
  2. Cache issues. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. This clears bugs or stuck data

Still stuck? It might be worth trying Tinder on desktop: tinder.com.

Why does Tinder want my phone number?

  1. Account verification. To make sure you’re a real person and not a bot. They send a code via SMS to confirm it’s you.
  2. Prevent spam and fake profiles. Tinder uses your number to track repeat sign-ups or suspicious behavior. It’s part of their anti-abuse system.
  3. Login method. Your phone number acts as a way to log in without needing Facebook or email.

Yes, they also use your data for ad targeting and platform behavior tracking, it’s part of how free apps stay profitable.

How to delete your Tinder account

Here’s how to delete your Tinder account (not just the app):

On mobile:

  1. Open the Tinder app
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right)
  3. Go to Settings
  4. Scroll all the way down
  5. Tap “Delete Account”
  6. Follow the steps to confirm

On desktop:

  1. Go to tinder.com and log in
  2. Click your profile icon
  3. Go to Manage Account
  4. Click Delete Account

IMPORTANT: Deleting the app does not delete your profile. You must go through the steps above, or your profile stays visible and active.

How to reinstall Tinder or use it on desktop

To reinstall Tinder (on phone):

  1. Delete the app from your device
  2. Go to the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
  3. Search for Tinder
  4. Download and reinstall it
  5. Open the app and log in using your original method (phone number, Apple ID, Google, or Facebook)

Be sure to log in the same way you did before, or you might accidentally create a new account.

To use Tinder on desktop:

  1. Go to tinder.com
  2. Click “Log In”
  3. Choose your login method (same as mobile: phone number, Google, Facebook, or Apple)
  4. Start swiping — works just like the app

Why did my matches suddenly disappear?

If your Tinder matches have suddenly disappeared, here are the most common reasons:

  1. You were logged out or switched login methods. Using a different phone number, Apple ID, or Facebook can create a new account. Log back in with the same method you originally used
  2. App glitch. Tinder sometimes bugs out sometimes, try closing and reopening the app, or reinstalling it.
  3. Tinder banned or shadowbanned you. If you broke community guidelines or reset your account too often, matches may be wiped. Shadowbans aren’t always obvious, but your visibility drops and matches disappear
  4. Your matches deleted their accounts. If someone deletes Tinder, they vanish from your match list.
  5. You accidentally unmatched. Easy to do with a mis-tap. Now they’re gone for good.

What is a Tinder shadowban?

A Tinder shadowban is when your account gets silently flagged, you’re still using the app like normal, but nobody sees you.

What happens if you get shadowbanned:

  • You stop getting matches, even after lots of swiping
  • No one replies to your messages
  • You barely see new profiles
  • Everything looks “fine,” but Tinder has basically made you invisible

Why it happens:

  • Mass swiping or using bots
  • Creating and deleting accounts too often
  • Breaking Tinder’s rules (inappropriate content, spamming, etc.)

How to fix it:

There’s no official way. Most people either:

  • Wait it out (can take weeks or months).
  • Delete their account permanently, wait a bit, then start fresh with a new number, new photos, and a slightly different bio.
